Photography as per 30/03/2009
I’ll be honest here, I want to do photography as often as I want to have a cigarette – and trust me, that’s quite frequent. Sometimes because there is something that I want to have a look at whenever I’d like, sometimes just to impress people. Yet, there is the small problem of cost.
For as I see it, there is a price to be payed. Literally. I could make photos with a simple point and shoot or a not-so-simple bridge camera, but I wouldn’t like it. Why? Because the only camera I’ve ever owned is a 35mm Canon SLR and anything below that is pointless. Why downgrade to something that I know I won’t enjoy working with?
Why won’t I enjoy it? Because I’m the kind of person who takes the time to get the picture right. Tweak the settings, think about the direction, the light conditions, and so on, before actually taking the picture. I’m not saying that I make great stills all the time, I’m merely trying to emphasize that I do use much of the advantage (D)SLR’s have over the simpler categories.
I’ve had my Canon for around 6 years now. The first 3 of those were spent with shooting everything and anything I saw. Yes, developing the pictures cost money, but I was in China at the time and it was a rather affordable hobby to have over there (read: developing a film and buying a new one cost less than a can of coke). When we moved home however, the price of developing a film proved to be far more than I could afford. And so photography pretty much disappeared onto a list called “Things to do in the future…”
With the ascent of digital cameras this part of my dreams is being given another chance. No, I’m not buying a camera anytime soon, but the fact that I could spend an amount of money at one time, then take as many pictures I want for no extra money… Well that’s a very attractive proposition.
